Hazardous Materials Response Team

The West Feliciana Hazardous Response Team is a cooperative effort between the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office and Fire Protection District #1 of West Feliciana Parish. This team will provide valuable services to the people of West Feliciana Parish in the event of a Hazardous Materials Incident. The Response Team brings together professionals from the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office and the West Feliciana Parish Fire District to safely manage and mitigate Hazardous Materials Incidents in West Feliciana Parish.


Team Personnel

Fire Chief Boyett has 29 years experience in Emergency Response and Hazardous Materials Mitigation. Chief Boyett is a Haz Mat Technician with over 1000 hours of training. He has responded to Haz Mat incidents for Fire District #1 since 1987. Chief Boyett has served as an instructor for the LSU-Fire and Emergency Training Institute and has instructed for emergency response agencies throughout the nation. Chief Boyett is a member of the International Association of arson Investigators and the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators and has served as an instructor for these agencies. Chief Boyett was a member of the 1999 Bomb Squad Olympics first place Team. Chief Boyett also brings many capable and well-trained firefighters to the team. Fire District #1 of West Feliciana Parish has several experienced and well -qualified Haz Mat Technicians and Operations Level personnel that are available at a moments notice.

Deputy Tommy Stubbs brings to the team 5 years of local law enforcement experience. Deputy Stubbs has served as an Undercover Narcotics Officer and a Chemical Weapons Instructor. Deputy Stubbs is currently assigned to the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office Uniform Patrol and also the to the Motorcycle Division. Deputy Stubbs also serves on the Special Response Team. Deputy Stubbs is serving on the Haz Mat Response team as an Explosive Specialist in-training.

West Feliciana Sheriff's Deputy John Somerindyke has 37 years of experience as an Explosive Specialist. He has been a member of the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators for more than 20 years and has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his service. He has held the positions of Chapter Director for North Carolina, Region II Intelligence Officer, and is currently the Training Officer for the State of Louisiana. John Somerindyke was the team leader for the 1st Place Team in the 1999 Bomb Squad Olympics and the 2nd Place Team in the 2000 Olympics. John Somerindyke is a retired Special Forces Sergeant Major and has instructed bomb technicians froom 29 countries.


Team Mission

The West Feliciana Parish Hazardous Materials Response Team will respond to any hazardous material incident within West Feliciana Parish. The Team will also respond to any request for assistance by agencies outside of West Feliciana Parish on an as needed basis. The Haz Mat Response Team is also available to train personnel from public agencies and private industry.

The Haz Mat Response team offers many response services, including:

Members of the Haz Mat Response Team are trained to safely remove and dispose of all explosives and hazardous devices, including:
*Bombs                                 *Suspected Bombs
*Military Ordnance                     *Explosive Chemicals
*Hazardous Devices                     *Commercial Explosives
*Deteriorating (unstable) explosives   *Fireworks
*Outdated police chemical agents and ammunition


The Hazardous Materials Response Team provides guidance and training to industry and public service agencies in the following fields:
*Response to chemical emergencies      *Response to explosive emergencies
*Post Blast Investigations             *Recognition & Identification of Explosives
*Bomb threat response planning for industry and schools
